Berks On Bikes Handicap Sprint Race

After the Sport race at Crowthorne Wood a one lap Handicap Sprint Race was held for Berks On Bikes members as a thank you for helping prepare the courses and maintain the trails. Congratulations to 67-year old Ken Pearce who won by 4 seconds from Alan Spencer with John Nicol only 15 seconds down. Full results below.

You may well ask what on earth is a handicap race? It's similar to the golf handicapping system enabling players (riders) of differing abilities to compete on level terms. In this case the faster riders start later and have to catch up the slower riders.

How were the start times calculated? We analysed the results from your race earlier in the day (or made them if you didn't race!) and recorded the fastest lap time for each rider, sorted them in order of slowest to fastest and worked out start time intervals. So, the slowest riders started at 2:10pm, with the remaining riders starting at intervals right through to the whippets 9 minutes later. The objective being that the hares should catch the tortoises within sight of the finish - all things being equal.
