Southern XC on Sunday
by Luke Webber, 01 Sep 05.
Southern XC Round Five stops off at Surrey Hill on Sunday September 4 for the penultimate race of the series. Hosts, Gorrick MBC, are promising a fantastic course, using some new sections of the forest with fast swoopy singletrack, plenty of space for overtaking and a great short course for the younger riders as well.
Duncan Jamieson currently heads the Elite rankings and if his recent form continues he will be favourite for the series title. However, newly crowned Southern Area Champ Jamie Newall will be ready to capitalise on any error, with Stuart Bowers also within striking distance.
Simon Willats has dominated the Super Masters this year, winning three from four races. Only Jason Emery can deny Willats the title, but the math places him with a very outside chance.
George Budd has made short work of the Sport series this year, proving the runaway winner before the series finishes. He will step up to Elite for the final two races and leave it to a host of riders to round out the final two podium places.
Another extraordinary result has been in the Veterans, where Mark Chadbourne has remained unbeaten in all four races so far, picking up the title without breaking sweat.
In Masters, Grand Veterans, Juniors and Youth there is still everything to play for, as well as in all the women's categories.
Round Five kicks of at usual Southern XC times and will not run to Gorrick's usual schedule, so make sure you check before turning up late. There will however be all the usual Gorrick hospitality - including a heckling Jon Lucas starting all racing off and results available both on the day and the evening after the race. The trade stands to service your needs for clothing, spares, energy products etc are 1st Gear Cycles and TORQ Fitness.
Entry forms, along with everything you need to know about the series is on SouthernXC.com with entry on the day available.
