Normandy TrailTrax results

Normandy was a new TrailTrax location ideally situated with a good mix of easier and harder trails for all abilities. Considering the recent inclement weather most trails were in good condition with only a few sticky patches of mud to be found but it didn't put you off from scaling the Hogs Back to reach the delights of Puttenham Common and beyond.

The three hour categories were well attended with the occasional points tie such as in the Mixed Pairs, both on the number of points scored (1670) and the elapsed time (2h58m) had to be decided on who started first. The early birds were Carl Silver & Alison Wilson taking first from Steve Cox & Jenny Symons. Jason & Louise Robinson made the most of their local knowledge to place third with 1510.

Yet another tie was seen in Veteran Pairs between Terry Morgan & Craig Wilson and Mark Smith & Mark Watson. The former pair taking second with just a one minute advantage. Gerry Mepham & Andy Anderson were already clear leaders.

The first clearance of the day in just 2h42m was by Rick Fetherston. John Hill-Venning also managed a clearance but was penalised 20 points for 2 minutes overtime.

Next to arrive with a clearance in a time of 2h53m was the Pair of Gary Shipp & Paul Smith. TrailTrax regulars Trevor Hillman & Warren Peters ambitiously went for some extra points but it cost them a 70 point penalty.

The tables were turned in the Veteran Solos where Mike Richman scored an impressive 1780 after penalty but he was just overhauled by 10 points by Nick Calkin.

The new Grand Veteran Solo category introduced today proved popular. Nick Dean originally scored highly but returned 23 minutes late to knock him back down to 1680, fortunately not enough to be challenged by Julian Hemsted in second with 1510. Nick commented on his late return "All of a sudden my navigation failed me at the furthest point. I couldn't even figure out the way to the finish."

Iwona Szmyd is always a force to be reckoned with in the Solo Women, but with no other competitors today it's interesting to see she would have placed third in the Solo Men.

Thanks to Mountain Trax of Wokingham for supplying the product prizes. And for your generosity in raising money for the Mountain Rescue teams on behalf of the late Martin Brown.

We look forward to seeing you on New Years Eve at Eversley for the final TrailTrax of the year to burn off your excesses.
